Problem details:
The customer was unable to access the Internet on a laptop using a Linksys WUSB54GC wireless USB dongle. When attempting to use Windows to disconnect and reconnect (WZC) he was told that another application was managing his wireless settings. Unfortunately, he could not find this application under his program files.
Solution details:
Using device manager, I uninstalled the hardware dongle. We noticed that it was called "Compact Wireless Network Adapter" rather than "Linksys Compact Wireless Network Adapter" and used this information to find the utility in his program files folder in the C's rather than the P's. We uninstalled the previous drivers, then reinstalled them using the CD. (They can also be downloaded from the web and burned to disc or flash drive using another computer.) The CD re-initialized the connection and asked for the WEP password, which we obtained from the router. After entering the WEP password, the customer received a message that he was connected to the access point but not to the Internet. We unplugged the router, waited 30 seconds, then replugged it in and verified his Internet was once again working.
