Numlock on by default
Problem details:
Some people prefer numlock to be turned on by default whereas others prefer it to be turned off. In most computers (desktops especially) there is an option in the BIOS to turn the numlock on or off by default but for many people, especially laptop owners, the BIOS may offer no such option.
Solution details:
The next best way to solve this problem is by using the registry. To open it, click Start, then run and type "regedit" and click OK.
IF YOU HAVE A MICROSOFT KEYBOARD OR MOUSE CHECK TO SEE IF YOU HAVE THE INTELLIPOINT DRIVERS INSTALLED BY GOING TO CONTROL PANEL/ADD REMOVE PROGRAMS AND LOOK IN THE LIST FOR INTELLIPOINT OR INTELLITYPE DRIVERS.
ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY BEFORE MAKING CHANGES AS CHANGES ARE IMMEDIATE AND POWERFUL.
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE INTELLIPOINT/INTELLITYPE DRIVERS:
Go to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard and double-click the InitialKeyboardIndicators key. (Add it if you don't see it.) Choose one of the following values:
0 - all indicators off
1 - Caps Lock on
2 - Num Lock on
4 - Scroll Lock on
Or, combine them by adding the corresponding values:
3 - Caps Lock and Num Lock on
5 - Caps Lock and Scroll Lock on
6 - Num Lock and Scroll Lock on
7 - Caps Lock, Num Lock, and Scroll Lock on
IF YOU DO HAVE INTELLIPOINT/INTELLITYPE DRIVERS INSTALLED:
Go to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Microsoft Input Devices\Keyboard. (Add Keyboard if it's not there.) Add the string NumLock to the key. Then choose either ON or OFF for the value depending on what you prefer.
