Problem details:
Windows 2000 machine freezing when trying to get to websites.
Solution details:
Uninstalled conflicting spyware apps, ad-aware (2 versions) and spybot, made sure Symantec av is setup properly, cleared internet temp files, checked registry run keys for any malware, fixed java.
